George “Skip” O. Wescott Jr., 67, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.
He came into the world in Norfolk, VA in June of 1959 to George and Nelda Wescott. Skip was a dedicated officer with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, where he retired in January of 2011, after 28 years of service. Retirement did not diminish the profound bonds Skip forged throughout his career, as he frequently looked forward to meeting his former colleagues for breakfast and lunch. These regular get-togethers brought him immense joy and fulfillment. Skip viewed his professional inner circle not merely as peers, but as an extension of his own family- a sentiment that remained unchanged throughout his life.
Skip was a dedicated and long-time member of both the Dare County RC Flyers club and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was widely known for his sharp sense of humor, his unwavering love for his daughters and family, and a lifelong passion for all things aviation. Skip found true peace and contentment spending quiet hours on his deck, where he took great joy in watching the local wildlife gather to enjoy the corn, peanuts, and treats he faithfully provided for them.
Skip’s unexpected passing comes as a shock to his family, friends, and loved ones, who are still reeling at the loss. He was preceded in death by his father, George O. Wescott Sr., and his mother, Nelda Keeton Wescott.
He is survived by his daughters, Vonnie Wescott, Gigi Wescott, and McKenzie Wescott Johnson; his brother, Kevin Wescott; grandchildren, Bailey, Max, and Hailynn; his niece, Lauren W. Carlton and nephew, Ben Wescott.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks Chapel. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to the Outer Banks SPCA (www.obxspca.org/donate/), PO Box 2477, Manteo, NC 27954. This gesture beautifully reflects his love for animals as he deeply cherished the company of all his rescue grand-dogs.
Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC, is honored to assist the Wescott family. Condolences and memories may be shared on Skip’s obituary page at www.TwifordFH.com.
