On Friday, Oct. 2, NCDOT provided this update on its ongoing work on NC12 in the wake of the nor’easter that slammed into the OBX last week.
Both northbound and southbound travel on Hatteras was restored on Oct. 1, using a temporary roadway at the Pea Island Visitor Center that allows one-lane traffic controlled by automated flaggers.
NCDOT ended emergency ferry service between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point on Sept. 30 and resumed full service on the Hatteras Ocracoke-Hatteras ferry route on the morning of Oct. 1.
The remaining work is now focused on opening NC12 to regular two-way traffic, hopefully by early next week.
According to the latest update, NCDOT:
Continued work to rebuild the protective dune line.
Removed all the broken asphalt.
Prepared the north bound lane subgrade for an asphalt base course.
Currently laying asphalt base on the northbound lane.
Tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 3) if weather allows, NCDOT intends to lay an intermediate course of asphalt across both travel lanes.
If that asphalt work before is completed before the rains expected over the weekend, NCDOT is in a great position to open the road to free-flowing two-way traffic on or before our original opening date of the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 6.
