Bea Basnight, who had previously served 12 years on the Dare County Board of Education, has been selected by the Executive Committee of the Dare County Republican Party to fill the vacancy on the Dare County Board of Commissioners created when Jim Tobin passed away on Oct. 18. The board of commissioners will vote on approving her appointment at its Dec. 4 meeting. There will be new mayors in Kill Devil Hills and Manteo after incumbent commissioners defeated the incumbent mayors in both towns in the Nov. 7 municipal elections. Overall, turnout for this “off-year” election in Dare County was 24%, with 4,387 voters casting ballots. That represents an increase over the 2021 numbers, when 21% of the eligible electorate, 3,490 voters, cast their ballots. Full story
