A fire Monday in Tyrrell County destroyed a building and four vehicles inside.
Sheriff Darryl Liverman was first to respond to a call to the Regional 911 Center at 2:06 p.m. and saw smoke pouring from the east end of the building on U.S. 64 just east of Columbia.
Crews from the Tyrrell, Creswell and Roper fire departments along with Washington-Tyrrell EMS and the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene for more than four hours.
At one point, lanes in both directions of of U.S. 64 were closed. One lane eventually was open to traffic, according to an e-mail from the sheriff.
The Town of Columbia Fire Marshal is investigating.
