Work on U.S. 158 in front of the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and the Dare Centre started Jan. 7 and is scheduled to be finished by mid-May.

Piping has been installed from W. Third Street south to the fire station, then turning west to an existing ditch.

The project is aimed at improving drainage in the Whispering Pines area.

It will also add a layer of new pavement on Pine Grove Trail, Quail Lane, Goldie Street, Harrington Avenue, Shay Street, Pine Cone Court, Pine Needle Court and Heather Lane.

With the storm drainage piping in, crews with Hatchell Concrete next built gutters and curbs. Recently, new asphalt was put down at entrances to the fire station and the shopping center.

A new concrete sidewalk is also being built.

Finishing touches include seeding, sodding and adding crosswalk markings. The cost of the project is $859,921.58.
