First Flight High School’s Katherine Schuster brought home another addition to her already crowded trophy shelf when she captured the 2019 Women’s Dixie Amateur Championship on Friday, Dec. 20. The tournament was held at the Woodlands Country Club in Tamarac Florida.
Schuster fired a final round 69 for a four-day total of 280 (-8), ending in a tie with Mychael O’Berry of Hoover Alabama, who is a junior at Auburn. But Schuster was awarded the victory because O’Berry, who had to leave the site early to catch a flight, was unable to participate in a playoff.
Schuster played a dramatic final round, carding six birdies and three bogeys. Trailing by three strokes at one point, she birdied four of the last eight holes to pull into the tie, just missing a 12-foot putt on the final hole that would have given her the outright win.
Just to review the incredible resume of this future LPGA star, Schuster won her third straight Women’s 1A/2A State High School Championship Golf Championship back in late October.
In August, she won the Hope Valley Junior Invitational golf title in Durham by eight strokes over her closest female competitor. In July, she took the title at Girls’ North & South Junior Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., shooting a one-over-par 217 for the three-day event. In June, she captured the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Golf Championship held at the Wilson Country Club.
Her resume also includes winning the prestigious 2018 National Drive, Chip and Putt Competition at the storied Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia.
