Dare County positive test rate at 14.9%

The Dare County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reported 27 cases of COVID-19 on Jan. 5, bringing the total number of cases reported here from the outset of the pandemic to 1,829.

Another Jan. 5 update from the DHHS provided these metrics as well.

  • In the week from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3, there were 264 new cases of COVID-19 reported.
  • Of these new cases, 84% of them are symptomatic.
  • 81% of these new cases were acquired by direct contact with an individual or individuals who were positive for COVID-19.
  • There were 1,776 COVID tests performed in Dare County in the past week and the rate of positive tests was 14.9%.
  • That brings the overall rate of positive tests performed since the beginning of the pandemic up to 6.62%

As to the current spread of the virus locally, the update states that, “The vast majority of new cases of COVID-19 in Dare County continue to be linked to direct contact between close friends, co-workers and families. As anticipated, much of the rise in recent cases is connected to gatherings of coworkers, families and friends around the Christmas holiday.”

In terms of the vaccination plan in Dare County, DHHS is now accepting registration information for Priority Phase 1b, Group 1, which consists of individuals 75 and over. “Information for registration can be submitted online at www.darenc.com/Register4Vaccine or by calling the COVID-19 call center at 252-475-5008. Please know, we are only receiving a very limited amount of the vaccine each week from the state.”

According to numbers from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, 444 people in Dare County have now received their initial COVID vaccine shots.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 5,285 new cases of COVID-vaccine on Jan. 5, with another high rate of positive tests of 16.2%. Another recent trend, a daily increase in the number of hospitalizations, also continued with a record high 3,781 in the state.

In addition, the Modified Stay-at-Home Order from Governor Roy Cooper that took effect on Dec. 11 was set to be in effect until at least this Friday, Jan. 8. On Wednesday Jan. 6, a press briefing on COVID-19 is scheduled for 2 p.m. at which point there may be information on the status of this Order.

 

Today’s statewide NC coronavirus numbers

  • Total reported NC cases – 575,396
  • New cases reported today – 5,285
  • Reported deaths – 6,996 (55 since yesterday)
  • Currently hospitalized – 3,781 (up 146 since yesterday)
  • Suspected COVID-19 cases hospitalized in past 24 hours – 265 (up 2 from yesterday)
  • Confirmed COVID-19 case hospitalized in past 24 hours – 382 (down 22 from yesterday)
  • Adults in ICU with COVID-19 – 813 (up 30 from yesterday)
  • Patients presumed to be recovered – 487,090
  • Reported cases in Dare, Currituck and Hyde Counties – 2,976 (Dare 1,829, Currituck 714, Hyde 433)
  • Completed tests – 7,150,588
  • Daily percent positive tests – 16.2%
  • Received first dose of vaccine – 109,799, received both doses—461

Note: Every morning, the NC Department of Health and Human Services posts updates the number of reported cases of coronavirus. That number reflects positive results from all tests, including the NC State Laboratory of Public Health and all hospital and commercial labs. There may be other reports, from the media and elsewhere, that will include different numbers during a given day, but this is an effective way of tracking numbers from the same source on a day-to-day basis.

    If you look at the stats, Roanoke island and Mann’s harbor have jumped ahead of everyone else. No mention of these metrics has been made to help people such as Teresa tell where hot zones are. You just have to assume anyone you come across could be contagious. Mask up !

    Reality here… Most ARE wearing masks, applying common sense distancing, and practicing improved hygiene. We just are, and making asinine generalizations against this fact is, well, asinine. Comments here often make it seem as though the writers are the only people virally virtuous enough to pass judgement on everyone else. Get over yourselves. Even a virus so dangerous you need a test to find out if you have it does what other viruses do. In that respect, this virus is textbook.
