Coinjock man airlifted to Norfolk General after single-vehicle collision

On February 14, 2026, at approximately 9:52 a.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle collision on Waterlily Road in Currituck County. The incident involved a rollback wrecker operated by Elijah Caroon, 25, of Coinjock, North Carolina. Preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Caroon crossed the center line, traveled off the roadway to the left, and struck a tree. No other vehicles were involved. Mr. Caroon was airlifted by Nightingale to Norfolk General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He has been charged with Driving Left of Center and Failure to Wear a Seatbelt.

    In this day and age some people still don’t wear seatbelts! Amazing! My first car was a 1969 VW beetle, it only had lap belts but I wore them.

    I also don’t understand why people don’t wear seatbelts. Once you get in the habit of buckling up, it becomes automatic.
    My grandson and his girlfriend were recently in an accident in another state. The were exiting on a cloverleaf exchange, and misjudged the curve. Their car rolled twice. All windows were broken, obviously the car was totaled. They’re alive, with just minor injuries from the broken glass, only because they were buckled up.

    KHer and Liz, it just “isn’t cool” to wear seat belts. – Insert sarcasm here. I personally don’t feel right if I don’t have one on in the car.
