Cape Hatteras National Seashore will close a portion of the Sandy Bay parking lot to support a Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative project that will upgrade the electric transmission system beginning Nov. 2. The project is expected to be completed in late January 2027.
The CHEC project will replace 15 existing wooden poles with 15 concrete transmission structures between the Sandy Bay parking lot and Hatteras Village. Hatteras Island residents and visitors should expect brief, intermittent lane closures on N.C. Highway 12 when the new transmission structures arrive, and the existing wooden poles are removed.
Public access to Pamlico Sound for waterfowl hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities will remain available throughout the project. For their safety, visitors should avoid all active construction areas.
